Given below are four statements (A-D) each with one or two blanks. Select the option which correctly fills up the blanks in two statements.

  1. C - (i) vestigial, (ii) anatomical, D - (i) mutations, (ii) multiplication
  2. D - (i) small variations, (ii) survival, A - (i) convergent
  3. A - (i) convergent, B - (i) oxygen, (ii) nucleosides
  4. B - (i) water vapour, (ii) amino acids, C - (i) rudimentary, (ii) anatomical

Answer

(2) D - (i) small variations, (ii) survival, A - (i) convergent

Solution

A: Wings of butterfly and birds look alike but are not anatomically similar; they result from convergent evolution (analogy).

D: As per NCERT, Darwin's theory is based on variations and natural selection, i.e., survival of the fittest.

⇒ D – (i) small variations, (ii) survival and A – (i) convergent fill the blanks correctly.

In option (1), 'mutations' is de Vries' idea, and in option (3) Miller's mixture had no oxygen and gave amino acids.

Answer: (2)
