Which of the following has longest C-O bond length? (Free C-O bond length in CO is 1.128 Å.)
- [Fe(CO)4]2-
- [Mn(CO)6]+
- Ni(CO)4
- [Co(CO)4]-
Answer
(1) [Fe(CO)4]2-
Solution
As per NCERT, the metal–carbon bond in metal carbonyls has both σ and π character: the filled metal d orbital donates electrons into the vacant antibonding π* orbital of CO (synergic bonding / back bonding).
More electron density on the metal ⇒ more back donation into π* of CO ⇒ lower C–O bond order ⇒ longer C–O bond.
Oxidation states: Fe in [Fe(CO)4]2- = −2; Co in [Co(CO)4]- = −1; Ni in Ni(CO)4 = 0; Mn in [Mn(CO)6]+ = +1.
∴ Back bonding is maximum in [Fe(CO)4]2-, so its C–O bond is the longest.
