Which one is most reactive towards nucleophilic addition reaction?

  1. [figure]
  2. [figure]
  3. [figure]
  4. [figure]

Answer

(4) [figure]

Solution

As per NCERT, aldehydes are more reactive than ketones in nucleophilic addition reactions (steric and electronic reasons); so acetophenone (2) is the least reactive.

Electron-withdrawing groups on the ring increase the electrophilicity ( + charge) of the carbonyl carbon, while electron-releasing groups decrease it.

⇒ -NO2 (-I, -R) at the para position makes the C=O carbon most electrophilic; -CH3 (+I, hyperconjugation) lowers it.

∴ Reactivity: p-nitrobenzaldehyde > benzaldehyde > p-tolualdehyde > acetophenone
