The crops engineered for glyphosate are resistant/tolerant to :
- Bacteria
- Herbicides
- Fungi
- Insects
Answer
(2) Herbicides
Solution
Glyphosate (the active ingredient of 'Roundup') is a broad-spectrum herbicide (weedicide).
∵ Genetically modified crops such as Roundup Ready soybean, maize and cotton carry a gene for a glyphosate-insensitive enzyme (EPSP synthase).
⇒ Spraying glyphosate kills the weeds but not the crop.
As per NCERT, genetic modification has made crops more tolerant to stresses; herbicide-tolerant crops are one such example.
∴ Glyphosate-engineered crops are resistant/tolerant to herbicides.
