When glycerol is treated with excess of HI, it produces

  1. 2-iodopropane
  2. allyl iodide
  3. propene
  4. glycerol triiodide

Answer

(1) 2-iodopropane

Solution

CH2OH-CHOH-CH2OH HI CH2=CH-CH2I (allyl iodide)

CH2=CH-CH2I HI CH3-CHI-CH2I

CH3-CHI-CH2I CH3-CH=CH2 + I2

CH3-CH=CH2 HI CH3-CHI-CH3 (Markovnikov addition)

∴ With excess HI the final product is 2-iodopropane.
