The major organic product in the reaction is CH3-O-CH(CH3)2 + HI products

  1. CH3I + (CH3)2CHOH
  2. CH3OH + (CH3)2CHI
  3. ICH2OCH(CH3)2
  4. CH3O I |C(CH3)2

Answer

(1) CH3I + (CH3)2CHOH

Solution

As per NCERT, in the cleavage of a mixed ether having a methyl group and a primary or secondary alkyl group by HI, the halide ion attacks the less hindered methyl group by SN2 mechanism.

Step 1: CH3-O-CH(CH3)2 + HI CH3- H |O -CH(CH3)2 + I

Step 2: I- attacks the methyl carbon (least crowded):

I + CH3- H |O -CH(CH3)2 CH3I + (CH3)2CHOH

∴ The products are iodomethane and propan-2-ol.
