Solution
Phenols are much more acidic than alcohols because the phenoxide ion is stabilised by resonance; so 2-chloroethanol is the least acidic.
An electron-withdrawing group on the ring stabilises the phenoxide ion further and an electron-releasing group destabilises it.
o-Nitrophenol (-NO2: -I and -R effect) is more acidic than phenol.
o-Cresol (-CH3: +I effect and hyperconjugation) is less acidic than phenol.
As per NCERT, the presence of electron-withdrawing groups such as nitro group enhances the acidic strength of phenol, especially at ortho and para positions.
Order of acidity: o-nitrophenol > phenol > o-cresol > 2-chloroethanol.
