According to Oparin, which one of the following was not present in the primitive atmosphere of the earth ?

  1. Water vapour
  2. Oxygen
  3. Methane
  4. Hydrogen

Answer

(2) Oxygen

Solution

As per NCERT, Oparin of Russia and Haldane of England proposed that the first form of life could have come from pre-existing non-living organic molecules.

⇒ The conditions on early earth were high temperature, volcanic storms and a reducing atmosphere containing CH4, NH3, H2 and water vapour.

∴ Free oxygen was absent in the primitive atmosphere.

Answer: (2)
