A disc of radius 2 m and mass 100 kg rolls on a horizontal floor. Its centre of mass has speed of 20 cm/s. How much work is needed to stop it?
- 1 J
- 2 J
- 3 J
- 30 kJ
Answer
(3) 3 J
Solution
Kinetic energy of a rolling disc:
K = 12mv2 + 12I 2
I = 12mR2 and = vR
K = 12mv2 + 14mv2 = 34mv2
= 34 100 (0.2)2 = 3 J
By the work–energy theorem, work needed to stop it = loss in kinetic energy = 3 J
Answer: (3)
