As shown in the diagram, when the incident ray is parallel to base of the prism, the emergent ray grazes along the second surface. [figure] If refractive index of the material of prism is 2, the angle of prism is.

  1. 75
  2. 90
  3. 60
  4. 45

Answer

(3) 60

Solution

First face makes 45 with the base and the incident ray is parallel to the base angle of incidence i = 45 .

Snell's law: 45 = 2 r1

r1 = 12 r1 = 30

Emergent ray grazes the second surface r2 = C, where C = 1 2

r2 = 45

Refracting angle (top vertex): A = r1 + r2 = 75

= 180 - 45 - 75 = 60

Answer: (3)
