When an object is placed 40 cm away from a spherical mirror an image of magnification 12 is produced. To obtain an image with magnification of 13, the object is to be moved :

  1. 20 cm away from the mirror.
  2. 20 cm towards the mirror.
  3. 80 cm away from the mirror.
  4. 40 cm away from the mirror.

Answer

(4) 40 cm away from the mirror.

Solution

Positive magnification less than 1 (erect, diminished, virtual image) is produced only by a convex mirror.

u = -40 cm, m = - vu = 12 v = +20 cm

Mirror formula: 1f = 1v + 1u = 120 - 140 = 140 f = +40 cm

For m = 13: - vu = 13 v = - u3

140 = - 3u + 1u = - 2u u = -80 cm

The object must be shifted from 40 cm to 80 cm, i.e. 40 cm away from the mirror.

Answer: (4)
