A mirror is used to produce an image with magnification of 14. If the distance between object and its image is 40 cm, then the focal length of the mirror is .

  1. 10 cm
  2. 12.7 cm
  3. 10.7 cm
  4. 15 cm

Answer

(3) 10.7 cm

Solution

m = + 14 (positive and less than 1) the image is virtual, erect and diminished, so the mirror is convex.

m = - vu = 14 v = - u4

Let u = -x; then v = + x4 (image behind the mirror).

Distance between object and image: x + x4 = 40

x = 32 cm u = -32 cm, v = +8 cm

Mirror formula: 1f = 1v + 1u = 18 - 132

1f = 332

f = 323 10.7 cm

Answer: (3)
