Which of the following statements is not correct?

  1. The number of carbon atoms in a unit cell of diamond is 8
  2. The number of Bravais lattices in which a crystal can be categorized is 14
  3. The fraction of the total volume occupied by the atoms in a primitive cell is 0.48.
  4. Molecular solids are generally volatile.

Answer

(3) The fraction of the total volume occupied by the atoms in a primitive cell is 0.48.

Solution

In a primitive (simple cubic) cell, Z = 1 and a = 2r:

Fraction occupied = 43 r3(2r)3

= 6

0.524 (52.4%), not 0.48.

As per NCERT, there are 14 Bravais lattices, and molecular solids (weak intermolecular forces) are generally volatile.

Diamond has an fcc arrangement of C atoms with half of the tetrahedral voids also occupied by C, so it has 4 + 4 = 8 C atoms per unit cell; statement (1) is correct.

∴ Statement (3) is the incorrect one.
