With which one of the following elements silicon should be doped so as to give p-type of semiconductor?
- Selenium
- Boron
- Germanium
- Arsenic
Answer
(2) Boron
Solution
As per NCERT, when silicon (group 14) is doped with a group 13 element such as B, Al or Ga, which has only three valence electrons, an electron hole is created at the site of the fourth bond.
⇒ Conduction takes place through these holes (positive), giving a p-type semiconductor.
∵ As (group 15) gives n-type, Ge (group 14) gives no extra carriers, and Se (group 16) is not an acceptor,
∴ Boron gives p-type silicon.
