Which of the following amine will give the carbylamine test?

  1. [figure]
  2. [figure]
  3. [figure]
  4. [figure]

Answer

(4) [figure]

Solution

As per NCERT, the carbylamine reaction is given only by primary amines (aliphatic and aromatic).

C6H5NH2 + CHCl3 + 3KOH C6H5NC + 3KCl + 3H2O

N-Methylaniline and N-ethylaniline are secondary amines and N,N-dimethylaniline is a tertiary amine no isocyanide is formed.

aniline gives the carbylamine test.

Nitration of aniline in strong acidic medium also gives m-nitroaniline because

  1. in spite of substituents nitro group always goes to only m-position
  2. in electrophilic substitution reactions amino group is meta directive
  3. in absence of substituents nitro group always goes to m-position
  4. in acidic (strong) medium aniline is present as anilinium ion

The correct statement regarding the basicity of arylamines is

  1. arylamines are generally more basic than alkylamines because of aryl group
  2. arylamines are generally more basic than alkylamines, because the nitrogen atom in arylamines is sp-hybridised
  3. arylamines are generally less basic than alkylamines because the nitrogen lone-pair electrons are delocalised by interaction with the aromatic ring -electron system
  4. arylamines are generally more basic than alkylamines because the nitrogen lone-pair electrons are not delocalised by interaction with the aromatic ring -electron system.
