The following reaction [figure] is known by the name

  1. Perkin's reaction
  2. Acetylation reaction
  3. Schotten-Baumann reaction
  4. Friedel-Craft's reaction

Answer

(3) Schotten-Baumann reaction

Solution

Aniline is benzoylated by benzoyl chloride in the presence of aqueous NaOH to give benzanilide (C6H5NHCOC6H5).

C6H5NH2 + C6H5COCl NaOH C6H5NHCOC6H5 + HCl

As per NCERT, this benzoylation is carried out in the presence of a base, which removes the HCl formed and shifts the equilibrium to the right. Acylation of an amine (or phenol) with an acid chloride in aqueous alkali is called the Schotten–Baumann reaction.
