The secretory phase in the human menstrual cycle is also called :

  1. Follicular phase lasting for about 6 days
  2. Luteal phase and lasts for about 13 days
  3. Follicular phase and lasts for about 13 days
  4. Luteal phase and lasts for about 6 days

Answer

(2) Luteal phase and lasts for about 13 days

Solution

As per NCERT, after ovulation (about the 14th day of a 28-day cycle) the ruptured Graafian follicle forms the corpus luteum, which secretes large amounts of progesterone.

⇒ The post-ovulatory phase is called the luteal phase (secretory phase), as the endometrium becomes secretory under progesterone.

∴ It extends from about day 15 to day 28, i.e. about 13–14 days.
