Given below are two statements: In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :

  1. Both Statement I and Statement II are correct
  2. Both Statement I and Statement II are incorrect
  3. Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect
  4. Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct

Answer

(1) Both Statement I and Statement II are correct

Solution

As per NCERT, each restriction endonuclease recognises a specific palindromic nucleotide sequence in the DNA ⇒ Statement I is correct.

As per NCERT, restriction enzymes cut the strand of DNA a little away from the centre of the palindrome sites, but between the same two bases on the opposite strands (this leaves sticky ends) ⇒ Statement II is correct.
