Given below are two statements : [figure] In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :

  1. Both Statement I and Statement II are true
  2. Both Statement I and Statement II are false
  3. Statement I is true but Statement II is false
  4. Statement I is false but Statement II is true

Answer

(4) Statement I is false but Statement II is true

Solution

Molar mass of glucose = 180 g mol-1

Chamber 1: C1 = 18/1800.100 = 1.0 M

Chamber 2: C2 = 30/1800.250 = 0.67 M

In osmosis, solvent moves from the solution of lower concentration to that of higher concentration ⇒ H2O moves from chamber 2 to chamber 1 ⇒ Statement I is false.

Statement II: K2SO4 2K+ + SO42- ⇒ i = 3

n = 0.050174 = 2.87 10-4 mol ⇒ C = 2.87 10-42 = 1.44 10-4 M

π = iCRT = 3 × 1.44 10-4 × 0.083 × 300

⇒ π = 0.0107 bar ⇒ Statement II is true.
