19.5 g of fluoro acetic acid (molar mass = 78 g mol-1) is dissolved in 500 g of water at 298 K. The depression in the freezing point of water was 1°C. What is Ka of fluoro acetic acid ? (For water, Kf = 1.86 K kg mol-1). Assume molarity and molality to have same values.

  1. 10-6
  2. 4 10-4
  3. 3 10-5
  4. 3 10-3

Answer

(4) 3 10-3

Solution

Moles of acid = 19.578 = 0.25 mol

Molality, m = 0.250.5 kg = 0.5 mol kg-1 (= molarity C, as given)

Tf = i Kf m

⇒ 1 = i 1.86 0.5

⇒ i = 10.93 = 1.075

For HA H+ + A-: i = 1 +

⇒ = 0.075

Ka = C 21-

⇒ Ka = 0.5 (0.075)20.925

⇒ Ka = 2.81 10-30.925

∴ Ka 3.04 10-3 3 10-3
