What is the minimum velocity with which a body of mass m must enter a vertical loop of radius R so that it can complete the loop?

  1. 3gR
  2. 5gR
  3. gR
  4. 2gR

Answer

(2) 5gR

Solution

At the top of the loop the minimum speed is when gravity alone provides the centripetal force:

mg = mvtop2R ⇒ vtop2 = gR

Energy conservation between the bottom and the top (height 2R):

12mv2 = 12mvtop2 + mg(2R)

⇒ v2 = gR + 4gR = 5gR

∴ v = 5gR

Answer: (2)
