Two identical balls A and B having velocities of 0.5 m s-1 and -0.3 m s-1 respectively collide elastically in one dimension. The velocities of B and A after the collision respectively will be :

  1. -0.5 m s-1 and 0.3 m s-1
  2. 0.5 m s-1 and -0.3 m s-1
  3. -0.3 m s-1 and 0.5 m s-1
  4. 0.3 m s-1 and 0.5 m s-1

Answer

(2) 0.5 m s-1 and -0.3 m s-1

Solution

As per NCERT, in a one-dimensional elastic collision of two equal masses, the bodies simply exchange their velocities.

vA = uB = -0.3 m s-1 and vB = uA = 0.5 m s-1

Velocities of B and A after the collision are 0.5 m s-1 and -0.3 m s-1 respectively.
