Ques. 1JEE Main 2024, 5 April (Evening Shift)

The number of complexes from the following with no electrons in the t2 orbital is . TiCl4, [MnO4]-, [FeO4]2-, [FeCl4]-, [CoCl4]2-

  1. 4
  2. 2
  3. 3
  4. 1

Answer

(3) 3

Solution

All five are tetrahedral ⇒ splitting: e (lower, 2 orbitals) and t2 (higher, 3 orbitals); e fills first.

TiCl4: Ti4+, d0 ⇒ e0t20 ⇒ no t2 electron

[MnO4]-: Mn7+, d0 ⇒ e0t20 ⇒ no t2 electron

[FeO4]2-: Fe6+, d2 ⇒ e2t20 ⇒ no t2 electron

[FeCl4]-: Fe3+, d5 ⇒ e2t23 ⇒ has t2 electrons

[CoCl4]2-: Co2+, d7 ⇒ e4t23 ⇒ has t2 electrons

∴ Number of complexes = 3

Answer: (3)
