On electrolysis of dil. sulphuric acid using Platinum (Pt) electrode, the product obtained at anode will be :
- Oxygen gas
- H2S gas
- SO2 gas
- Hydrogen gas
Answer
(1) Oxygen gas
Solution
In dilute H2SO4 with inert Pt electrodes, oxidation of water is preferred at the anode:
Anode: 2H2O(l) O2(g) + 4H+(aq) + 4e-
Cathode: H+(aq) + e- 12H2(g)
As per NCERT, S2O82- forms at the anode only with concentrated H2SO4.
∴ Oxygen gas is obtained at the anode.
