Zinc can be coated on iron to produce galvanized iron but the reverse is not possible. It is because
- zinc is lighter than iron
- zinc has lower melting point than iron
- zinc has lower negative electrode potential than iron
- zinc has higher negative electrode potential than iron
Answer
(4) zinc has higher negative electrode potential than iron
Solution
E ( Zn2+/Zn) = -0.76 V, E ( Fe2+/Fe) = -0.44 V
Zinc has a higher negative electrode potential, so it is oxidised more readily than iron.
As per NCERT, corrosion is prevented by covering the surface with more electropositive metals (Zn, Mg) which corrode themselves but save the object (sacrificial protection).
An iron coating on zinc cannot protect zinc, as iron is less electropositive.
