In which case is number of molecules of water maximum?

  1. 18 mL of water
  2. 0.18 g of water
  3. 0.00224 L of water vapours at 1 atm and 273 K
  4. 10-3 mol of water

Answer

(1) 18 mL of water

Solution

Number of molecules ∝ number of moles; molar mass of H2O = 18 g mol-1.

(1) 18 mL water = 18 g (density 1 g mL-1) ⇒ n = 1818 = 1 mol

(2) n = 0.1818 = 10-2 mol

(3) At STP, n = 0.0022422.4 = 10-4 mol

(4) n = 10-3 mol

∴ 18 mL of water has the maximum number of molecules = 1 NA = 6.022 1023.
