A solid sphere of radius 4 cm and mass 5 kg is rotating (rotation axis is passing through the centre of the sphere) with an angular velocity of 1200 rpm. It is brought to rest in 10 s by applying a constant torque. The torque applied and the number of rotations it made before it comes to rest are and respectively.

  1. 0.128 Nm, 100
  2. 0.0128 Nm, 50
  3. 0.128 Nm, 50
  4. 0.0128 Nm, 100

Answer

(4) 0.0128 Nm, 100

Solution

I= 25MR2= 25 5 (0.04)2=3.2 10-3 kg m2

0=1200 rpm=1200 2 60=40 rad/s

Uniform retardation to rest in 10 s:

= 0t= 40 10=4 rad/s2

∴ =I =3.2 10-3 4 =0.0128 N m

Angle turned: = 0+02 t= 40 2 10=200 rad

⇒ Number of rotations = 200 2 =100

Answer: (4)
