Select the correct match of the digested products in humans given in column I with their absorption site and mechanism in column II.

  1. array|l|l| Column I & Column II \ Glycerol, fatty acids & Duodenum, move as chylomicrons \ array
  2. array|l|l| Column I & Column II \ Cholesterol, maltose & Large intestine, active absorption \ array
  3. array|l|l| Column I & Column II \ Glycine, glucose & Small intestine, active absorption \ array
  4. array|l|l| Column I & Column II \ Fructose, Na+ & Small intestine, passive absorption \ array

Answer

(3) array|l|l| Column I & Column II \ Glycine, glucose & Small intestine, active absorption \ array

Solution

As per NCERT, glucose, amino acids (e.g. glycine) and some electrolytes like Na+ are absorbed into the blood by active transport in the small intestine.

(1) Fatty acids and glycerol form micelles; they are reformed into chylomicrons inside the intestinal mucosa and pass into the lacteals, not 'move as chylomicrons' in the duodenum.

(2) Maltose is not absorbed (it is first digested to glucose); absorption occurs mainly in the small intestine, not the large intestine.

(4) Fructose is absorbed by facilitated transport with Na+ as carrier ion, and Na+ by active transport, not passive absorption.
