Identify the correct order of solubility in aqueous medium.

  1. Na2S > CuS > ZnS
  2. Na2S > ZnS > CuS
  3. CuS > ZnS > Na2S
  4. ZnS > Na2S > CuS

Answer

(2) Na2S > ZnS > CuS

Solution

Na2S is an ionic alkali-metal sulphide and is freely soluble in water.

ZnS and CuS are sparingly soluble; their solubility depends on Ksp:

Ksp(ZnS) 10-22 > Ksp(CuS) 10-36

⇒ ZnS is more soluble than CuS (that is why CuS is precipitated by H2S in acidic medium, group II, while ZnS needs alkaline medium, group IV).

∴ Na2S > ZnS > CuS
