Which of these is least likely to act as a Lewis base ?

  1. BF3
  2. PF3
  3. CO
  4. F-

Answer

(1) BF3

Solution

As per NCERT, a Lewis base is an electron-pair donor and a Lewis acid is an electron-pair acceptor.

PF3 (lone pair on P), CO (lone pair on C) and F- can donate electron pairs ⇒ Lewis bases.

In BF3, boron has only six electrons (incomplete octet) ⇒ it accepts an electron pair ⇒ Lewis acid.

∴ BF3 is least likely to act as a Lewis base.
