Given below are two statements : In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below

  1. Both Statement I and Statement II are true
  2. Statement I is false but Statement II is true
  3. Statement I is true but Statement II is false
  4. Both Statement I and Statement II are false

Answer

(1) Both Statement I and Statement II are true

Solution

Statement I:

1,2-Dipropylbenzene KMnO4/H+ benzene-1,2-dicarboxylic acid (phthalic acid), as each alkyl side chain is oxidised to –COOH.

Phthalic acid NH3, ammonium salt benzene-1,2-dicarboxamide (phthalamide), C6H4(CONH2)2

Phthalamide Br2/NaOH (Hoffmann bromamide degradation of both –CONH2 groups) benzene-1,2-diamine, C6H4(NH2)2

Statement I is true.

Statement II:

4-Methylaniline Br2/H2O 2,6-dibromo-4-methylaniline (–NH2 is strongly activating and directs Br to its ortho positions, para being occupied by CH3)

NaNO2/HCl, 0-5 °C 2,6-dibromo-4-methylbenzenediazonium chloride

H3PO2, H2O –N2+Cl- replaced by H 3,5-dibromotoluene (Br atoms meta to CH3)

Statement II is true.

A student has been given a compound 'x' of molecular formula C6H7N. 'x' is sparingly soluble in water. However, on addition of dilute mineral acid, 'x' becomes soluble in water. 'x' when treated with CHCl3 and KOH(alc), 'y' is produced. 'y' has a specific unpleasant smell. On treatment with benzenesulphonyl chloride, 'x' gives a compound 'z' which is soluble in alkali. The number of different "H" atoms present in 'z' is :

  1. 8
  2. 4
  3. 5
  4. 7

'A' is a neutral organic compound (M.F. : C8H9ON). On treatment with aqueous Br2/HO , 'A' forms a compound 'B' which is soluble in dilute acid. 'B' on treatment with aqueous NaNO2/HCl (0-5 C) produces a compound 'C' which on treatment with CuCN/NaCN produces 'D'. Hydrolysis of 'D' produces 'E' which is also obtainable from the hydrolysis of 'A'. 'E' on treatment with acidified KMnO4 produces 'F'. 'F' contains two different types of hydrogen atoms. The structure of 'A' is
