Consider an A.P.: a1, a2, , an; a1 > 0. If a2 - a1 = -34, an = 14a1, and i=1n ai = 5252, then i=117 ai is equal to

  1. 238
  2. 136
  3. 476
  4. 952

Answer

(1) 238

Solution

Common difference: d = a2 - a1 = - 34

an = a1 + (n-1)d = 14a1

34a1 = 34(n-1) a1 = n-1

i=1n ai = n2(a1 + an) = n2 54a1 = 5n(n-1)8

5n(n-1)8 = 5252

n(n-1) = 420 = 21 20

n = 21, a1 = 20

i=117 ai = 172 [2(20) + 16 (- 34 ) ]

= 172(40 - 12) = 17 14 = 238
