A millivoltmeter of 25 millivolt range is to be converted into an ammeter of 25 ampere range. The value (in ohm) of necessary shunt will be

  1. 0.001
  2. 0.01
  3. 1
  4. 0.05

Answer

(1) 0.001

Solution

At full scale, the potential difference across the meter (and across the shunt in parallel with it) is V = 25 mV = 25 10-3 V.

The current through the meter itself is negligible, so almost the whole 25 A flows through the shunt:

S = VI = 25 10-325

S = 0.001
