The maximum speed of a boat in still water is 27 km/h. Now this boat is moving downstream in a river flowing at 9 km/h. A man in the boat throws a ball vertically upwards with speed of 10 m/s. Range of the ball as observed by an observer at rest on the bank is cm. (Take g = 10 m/s2)

Answer

2000

Solution

Velocity of boat relative to bank (downstream, at maximum speed): 27 + 9 = 36 km/h = 10 m/s

For the observer on the bank, the ball has horizontal velocity ux = 10 m/s and vertical velocity uy = 10 m/s.

Time of flight: T = 2uyg = 2 1010 = 2 s

Range: R = ux T = 10 2 = 20 m

R = 2000 cm

Answer: 2000
