Ques. 1JEE Main 2024, 1 February (Morning Shift)

Let 3, a, b, c be in A.P. and 3, a-1, b+1, c+9 be in G.P. Then, the arithmetic mean of a, b and c is :

  1. -4
  2. -1
  3. 13
  4. 11

Answer

(4) 11

Solution

A.P. with common difference d: a=3+d, b=3+2d, c=3+3d

G.P.: 3, 2+d, 4+2d, 12+3d

(2+d)2=3(4+2d)

d2-2d-8=0 d=4 or d=-2

∵ d=-2 gives 3, 0, 0, 6 (not a G.P.)

d=4, G.P.: 3, 6, 12, 24

a=7, b=11, c=15

∴ A.M. = 7+11+153=11
