[figure] In the given circuits (a), (b) and (c), the potential drop across the two p-n junctions are equal in
- Circuit (a) only
- Circuit (b) only
- Circuit (c) only
- Both circuits (a) and (c)
Answer
(4) Both circuits (a) and (c)
Solution
In each circuit the two p-n junctions are in series with the cell.
Circuit (a): both junctions are oriented the same way (P–N, P–N) both have the same bias equal potential drops.
Circuit (b): the junctions are oriented oppositely (P–N, N–P) one is forward biased and the other reverse biased. The reverse-biased junction has a very high resistance, so almost the whole potential drop occurs across it drops unequal.
Circuit (c): both junctions are oriented the same way (N–P, N–P) same bias equal potential drops.
The potential drops are equal in both circuits (a) and (c).
