The reaction quotient (Q) for the reaction N2(g) + 3H2(g) 2NH3(g) is given by Q = [NH3]2[N2][H2]3. The reaction will proceed from right to left if

  1. Q = Kc
  2. Q < Kc
  3. Q > Kc
  4. Q = 0

Answer

(3) Q > Kc

Solution

As per NCERT:

If Qc < Kc ⇒ the reaction proceeds in the forward direction (left to right).

If Qc > Kc ⇒ the reaction proceeds in the reverse direction (right to left).

If Qc = Kc ⇒ the reaction mixture is at equilibrium.

∵ When Q > Kc there is excess product (NH3), it decomposes to bring Q down to Kc.
