Which one of the following statements is correct with respect to AIDS ?

  1. The causative HIV retrovirus enters helper T-lymphocytes thus reducing their numbers
  2. AIDS patients are being fully cured cent per cent with proper care and nutrition
  3. The HIV can be transmitted through eating food together with an infected person
  4. Drug addicts are least susceptible to HIV infection

Answer

(1) The causative HIV retrovirus enters helper T-lymphocytes thus reducing their numbers

Solution

As per NCERT, HIV (a retrovirus) enters macrophages, multiplies there and then attacks helper T-lymphocytes (TH); the number of helper T-lymphocytes progressively decreases. (1) is correct.

(2) Incorrect: anti-retroviral drugs are only partially effective; they prolong life but cannot prevent death – AIDS has no cure.

(3) Incorrect: HIV/AIDS is not spread by mere touch or physical contact (eating together); it spreads only through body fluids.

(4) Incorrect: drug addicts who take drugs intravenously (shared needles) are a high-risk group.
