Following compounds are given (i) CH3CH2OH (ii) CH3COCH3 (iii) CH3- CH3 |CHOH (iv) CH3OH Which of the above compound(s), on being warmed with iodine solution and NaOH, will give iodoform?

  1. (i), (iii) and (iv)
  2. Only (ii)
  3. (i), (ii) and (iii)
  4. (i) and (ii)

Answer

(3) (i), (ii) and (iii)

Solution

As per NCERT, compounds having CH3CO- group, or CH3CH(OH)- group (oxidised to CH3CO- by NaOI), give iodoform.

(i) CH3CH2OH has CH3CH(OH)- (with H) ⇒ oxidised to CH3CHO ⇒ gives CHI3

(ii) CH3COCH3 is a methyl ketone ⇒ gives CHI3

(iii) (CH3)2CHOH is oxidised to CH3COCH3 ⇒ gives CHI3

(iv) CH3OH has no CH3-C unit ⇒ no iodoform

∴ (i), (ii) and (iii)

Answer: (3)
