The electronegativity of a group 13 element 'E' is same as that of Ge (on Pauling scale and upto one decimal point). The CORRECT statements about E3+ are Choose the correct answer from the options given below :

  1. A and C Only
  2. B and C Only
  3. B and D Only
  4. A and D Only

Answer

(3) B and D Only

Solution

Electronegativity of Ge = 1.8; in group 13, thallium also has electronegativity 1.8 ⇒ E = Tl.

Inert pair effect: the 6s2 electrons of Tl resist taking part in bonding ⇒ the +1 state is more stable than +3

⇒ Tl+ is more stable than Tl3+ ⇒ C is incorrect.

Tl3+ readily accepts electrons to change to the more stable Tl+ ⇒ it is an oxidising agent ⇒ B is correct, A is incorrect.

E (Tl3+/Tl) = +1.26 V (positive) ⇒ D is correct.

∴ B and D

Answer: (3)
