Which of the following complex compounds will exhibit highest paramagnetic behaviour? (At. No. Ti = 22, Cr = 24, Co = 27, Zn = 30)

  1. [Cr(NH3)6]3+
  2. [Co(NH3)6]3+
  3. [Zn(NH3)6]2+
  4. [Ti(NH3)6]3+

Answer

(1) [Cr(NH3)6]3+

Solution

Cr3+: 3d3 ⇒ t2g3 ⇒ 3 unpaired electrons

Co3+: 3d6; NH3 pairs the electrons ⇒ t2g6 ⇒ 0 unpaired electrons

Zn2+: 3d10 ⇒ 0 unpaired electrons

Ti3+: 3d1 ⇒ 1 unpaired electron

∴ [Cr(NH3)6]3+ has the most unpaired electrons, = 3(3+2) = 3.87 BM
