A current carrying solenoid is placed vertically and a particle of mass m with charge Q is released from rest. The particle moves along the axis of solenoid. If g is acceleration due to gravity then the acceleration (a) of the charged particle will satisfy :

  1. a > g
  2. a = 0
  3. 0 < a < g
  4. a = g

Answer

(4) a = g

Solution

The magnetic field of a solenoid on its axis is directed along the axis.

The particle falls from rest along the axis, so its velocity v is parallel (or antiparallel) to B.

Magnetic force F = Q( v B) = 0 (angle between v and B is 0 or 180 )

The only force on the particle is its weight mg.

a = g

Answer: (4)
