Which of the following is not the function of placenta?

  1. Facilitates supply of oxygen and nutrients to embryo
  2. Secretes estrogen
  3. Facilitates removal of carbon dioxide and waste material from embryo
  4. Secretes oxytocin during parturition

Answer

(4) Secretes oxytocin during parturition

Solution

As per NCERT, the placenta facilitates the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the embryo and the removal of carbon dioxide and excretory/waste materials produced by the embryo.

⇒ It also acts as an endocrine tissue and produces hCG, hPL, estrogens, progestogens, etc.

⇒ Oxytocin is released from the maternal pituitary during parturition; it is not secreted by the placenta.

∴ Secreting oxytocin during parturition is not a function of the placenta.
