Given below are two statements : In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :

  1. Both Statement I and Statement II are incorrect
  2. Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect
  3. Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct
  4. Both Statement I and Statement II are correct

Answer

(4) Both Statement I and Statement II are correct

Solution

Statement I: If o < P (weak field ligand), the fourth electron enters an eg orbital ( t2g3 eg1) maximum unpaired electrons high spin.

If o > P (strong field ligand), pairing occurs in t2g ( t2g4 eg0) low spin. Statement I is correct.

Statement II: As per NCERT, t = 49 o, so the splitting is too small to force pairing.

t < P in practice, so low spin tetrahedral complexes are rarely formed. Statement II is correct.

Answer: (4)
