The bond dissociation energies of X2, Y2 and XY are in the ratio of 1 : 0.5 : 1. H for the formation of XY is -200 kJ mol-1. The bond dissociation energy of X2 will be

  1. 800 kJ mol-1
  2. 200 kJ mol-1
  3. 400 kJ mol-1
  4. 100 kJ mol-1

Answer

(1) 800 kJ mol-1

Solution

Let the bond dissociation energies of X2, Y2 and XY be a, 0.5a and a.

Formation of XY: 12X2 + 12Y2 XY

H = 12a + 12(0.5a) - a

= -0.25a

⇒ -0.25a = -200

⇒ a = 800 kJ mol-1
