Given below are two statements: In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below:

  1. Statement I is true but Statement II is false
  2. Both Statement I and Statement II are true
  3. Both Statement I and Statement II are false
  4. Statement I is false but Statement II is true

Answer

(1) Statement I is true but Statement II is false

Solution

Statement I: a homoleptic octahedral complex with monodentate ligands is of the type [MA6].

All six ligands are identical, every arrangement of them is the same (no cis / trans forms), and the complex has planes of symmetry (no optical isomers).

It shows no stereoisomerism Statement I is true.

Statement II: cisplatin and transplatin are cis- and trans-[Pt(NH3)2Cl2]. They are heteroleptic (NH3 and Cl-), but the central metal is Pt, not Pd.

Statement II is false.
