How many grams of concentrated nitric acid solution should be used to prepare 250 mL of 2.0 M HNO3? The concentrated acid is 70\% HNO3.

  1. 70.0 g conc. HNO3
  2. 54.0 g conc. HNO3
  3. 45.0 g conc. HNO3
  4. 90.0 g conc. HNO3

Answer

(3) 45.0 g conc. HNO3

Solution

Moles of HNO3 needed = M V

= 2.0 0.250 = 0.50 mol

⇒ Mass of HNO3 = 0.50 63 = 31.5 g

∵ The concentrated acid contains 70 g HNO3 in 100 g solution,

∴ Mass of conc. acid = 31.5 10070

= 45.0 g
