Select the correct option describing gonadotropin activity in a normal pregnant female.

  1. High level of FSH and LH stimulates the thickening of endometrium.
  2. High level of FSH and LH facilitates implantation of the embryo.
  3. High level of hCG stimulates the synthesis of estrogen and progesterone.
  4. High level of hCG stimulates the thickening of endometrium.

Answer

(3) High level of hCG stimulates the synthesis of estrogen and progesterone.

Solution

As per NCERT, during pregnancy the levels of hCG, hPL, estrogens and progestogens increase several folds in the maternal blood.

⇒ hCG secreted by the placenta maintains the corpus luteum, so it keeps on secreting estrogen and progesterone needed for the maintenance of pregnancy.

∵ FSH and LH levels stay low during pregnancy (high progesterone and estrogen inhibit their release), options (1) and (2) are wrong; the endometrium is thickened by estrogen and progesterone, not directly by hCG.

Answer: (3)
