A constant voltage of 50 V is maintained between the points A and B of the circuit shown in the figure. The current through the branch CD of the circuit is: [figure]

  1. 2.5 A
  2. 3.0 A
  3. 1.5 A
  4. 2.0 A

Answer

(4) 2.0 A

Solution

C and D are joined by a wire, so 1 3 lies between A and CD, and 2 4 between CD and B.

R1 = 1 31 + 3 = 34 , R2 = 2 42 + 4 = 43

Req = 34 + 43 = 2512

I = 5025/12 = 24 A

Current in 1 : I1 = 24 34 = 18 A (into C)

Current in 2 : I2 = 24 46 = 16 A (out of C)

At junction C: ICD = 18 - 16 = 2.0 A (from C to D)

Answer: (4)
