The hypothetical complex chloro diaquatriammine cobalt(III) chloride can be represented as

  1. [CoCl(NH3)3(H2O)2]Cl2
  2. [Co(NH3)3(H2O)Cl3]
  3. [Co(NH2)3(H2O)2Cl]
  4. [Co(NH3)3(H2O)3]Cl3

Answer

(1) [CoCl(NH3)3(H2O)2]Cl2

Solution

Ligands in the coordination sphere: chloro (Cl-) × 1, aqua (H2O) × 2, ammine (NH3) × 3 coordination number 6

Charge on the complex ion = +3 + (−1) + 0 + 0 = +2 [CoCl(NH3)3(H2O)2]2+

Two chloride ions are needed outside the sphere: [CoCl(NH3)3(H2O)2]Cl2

(As per NCERT, the present IUPAC name of this compound is triamminediaquachloridocobalt(III) chloride.)

In the silver plating of copper, K[Ag(CN)2] is used instead of AgNO3. The reason is

  1. a thin layer of Ag is formed on Cu
  2. more voltage is required
  3. Ag+ ions are completely removed from solution
  4. less availability of Ag+ ions, as Cu cannot displace Ag from [Ag(CN)2]- ion.
